This much-needed makeover aims to enhance the garden's functionality and accommodate its growing popularity, especially post-pandemic. The project's primary focus is on the existing greenhouse, which has become cramped and inadequate for the nonprofit's evolving mission and volunteer base.
The current greenhouse, akin to a small garage, is plagued by electrical issues and a lack of climate control. By relocating it closer to the parking lot, the new structure will not only provide better access but also enable the integration of solar energy. Executive Director Mica Pirie emphasizes the need for a more modern and efficient facility, stating, 'It’s just really not built for how we’re using it today as a community resource.'
The renovation also includes a new horticulture complex, featuring office space, a community meeting room, and workshop areas. This expansion aims to replace the existing potting shed, lath house, and storage building, addressing the growing demand for programming and volunteer hours. The garden's transformation is particularly timely, as it has seen a surge in visitors and volunteers since the pandemic, with Pirie noting, 'We need to have a better facility to maintain that, and that’s my primary focus.'
The project's historical significance is not overlooked. Gamble Garden, initially the home of Elizabeth and Edwin Percy Gamble, is classified as a Category 2 Historic Resource by the city. Any changes must adhere to strict standards to preserve its character and architectural integrity. The Historic Resources Board will review the updated plans, ensuring the renovation respects the garden's rich history and contributes to its 'historic integrity'.
The project's timeline is ambitious, with construction expected to commence in 2024 and completion anticipated by 2028. This extensive renovation aims to future-proof the garden, ensuring it remains a vibrant community resource for generations to come. As Pirie notes, 'We wanted to make sure that what we’re building is going to carry us forward and build it for how we’re using it today, and also how we might use it in the future.'
