Quincy to Chester: A Hiker's Journey Through Gear and Nature
As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I've embarked on a challenging journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, and I'm eager to share my experiences, especially the gear I've relied on and the insights I've gained along the way.
Gear Review: A Hiker's Companion
In the world of hiking, gear is your trusted companion, and I've had the pleasure of testing various items that have made my journey more enjoyable and comfortable.
Sun Hoody: My go-to choice for many miles, the Ridge Merino wool hoody is a game-changer. It keeps me smelling fresh even after long days on the trail, a testament to its quality.
Camp Shoes: ZPacks 2 oz camp shoes were a disaster, with a pine cone incident ruining my hiking experience. I switched to Locals brand flip flops, a wise decision for comfort and durability.
Camp Stove: The Jet Boil Stash is a compact and efficient companion, heating water quickly and proving its worth on numerous occasions.
Cup: I ditched the ultralight plastic cup for the Sea to Summit collapsible silicon cup, which offers better functionality and ease of use.
Backpack: My Durston Kakwa pack has served me well, but stitching issues and the inability to swap the hip belt are minor drawbacks. I've enhanced its comfort with a lumbar pad from ZPacks.
Vaucluse Ventilation Frame: While it keeps my back cool, I plan to upgrade to a pack with built-in ventilation for enhanced comfort.
Shoes: Topo Ultraventures are a love-hate relationship. They fit perfectly but lack durability, with several hikers sharing similar experiences. I'm on the lookout for a more reliable option.
Microspikes: Black Diamond microspikes have proven to be lighter and less damaging to my shoes. Their toe-covering design is a plus, especially in slushy conditions.
Tent: The Durston XDome 1+ is a spacious and freestanding tent, but its fabric and poles could be more durable. Durston's prompt replacement parts and repairs have been a huge help.
Portable Batteries: Flextail batteries are reliable and long-lasting, making them a top choice for my hiking adventures.
Socks: Darn Tough 1/4 length hiker wool socks are a game-changer. Their durability and lifetime guarantee make them a favorite, and they're proudly made in the US.
Shorts: REI running shorts are lightweight and dry quickly, perfect for the trail.
Hiking Undies: REI merino wool boxer briefs are a must-have. I alternate between pairs, ensuring I have clean clothes between towns.
Sleeping System: The Enlightened Equipment Enigma quilt and Zenbivy 1/2 sheet combination provide warmth and comfort, enhanced by the addition of silk liners for a luxurious sleep.
Water System: Sawyer Squeeze and Cnoc 2-liter bottles have been reliable and efficient, making water access a breeze.
Sunglasses: Ombros sunglasses with their unique drawstring design are a hit. They stay put even in challenging situations, making them my go-to choice.
Trekking Poles: Durston Iceline poles are lightweight, but their straps need improvement. I've repaired them with paracord, ensuring I can continue my journey.
Midpoint Milestone: Belden to Chester
Reaching the midpoint of my journey, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Belden, an old mining town, offered a welcome respite with its scenic views and the excitement of England's World Cup victory.
The climb out of Belden was a challenge, but the Cascade Mountains unveiled their beauty with andesite rock and groves of dead trees. Cold Spring, with its refreshing sodas, provided a much-needed break.
As I ventured further, the trail's overgrown sections and the Mountain Whitethorn's pinpricks reminded me of the trail's unpredictability. I took breaks, rehydrated, and continued my journey, determined to reach Chester.
Chester, a town of relaxation and reflection, offered a chance to catch up with fellow hikers, including Glitz and Oxyclean, and to prepare for the next leg of my adventure in Lassen National Park.
