Lois Roberts and Aron Lloyd, a young couple, have traded the hustle and bustle of Cardiff for a life of simplicity on the remote Welsh island of Ynys Enlli, also known as Bardsey Island. Their decision to leave city life behind was driven by a desire for sustainability and a more meaningful existence. The couple found a unique opportunity to live rent-free, working in exchange for maintaining gardens and holiday accommodations on the island. This off-grid lifestyle has brought them closer to nature and each other, offering a stark contrast to their previous city lives.
One of the most striking aspects of their new life is the sheer number of sheep on the island, outnumbering humans by a ratio of 66 to 1. Lois, who recently completed a master's degree in clinical psychology, reflects on the change, saying, "I didn't really think of where things came from before and took everything for granted. Now I know exactly where our water and power comes from – and I'm careful about the amount we use, as it's precious." This newfound awareness of sustainability is a key theme in their journey.
The island's isolation is another fascinating aspect of their new life. With no signal on the island (except for a trek to the top of the mountain), Lois and Aron feel like they're in a "bubble with its own time and rules." They consider the sheep their neighbors, and the spring lambing season is particularly charming. However, this isolation also comes with challenges, such as the need to be mindful of their water usage and the reliance on solar energy, which can be unpredictable.
Despite the challenges, Lois and Aron find great joy in their new life. They've embraced a slower pace, learning new crafts like knitting, cyanotype printing, weaving, and playing the banjo. They're also self-sustainable, with a vegetable patch, poly tunnel, lobster cages, and chickens providing fresh eggs daily. Their plan is to stay on the island for a few years, saving half of their pay, and then settle down elsewhere when the time is right.
The couple's decision to leave city life behind is a powerful statement about the importance of sustainability and community. Their journey raises deeper questions about the value of simplicity and the potential for a more meaningful existence outside of the hustle and bustle of urban life. From my perspective, their story is a testament to the power of personal choice and the potential for a more fulfilling life, even in the face of challenges and uncertainty.
